The Beck’s Edison Bottle

19th Century technology meets 21st Century music over a bottle of beer in the latest extension to the Beck’s Record Label project. This time, the art label has evolved, and been replaced by the grooves of Auckland band Ghost Wave. Their new single was inscribed into the surface of a Beck’s beer bottle which could then be played on a specially-built device based on Thomas Edison’s original phonograph.

Making the world’s first playable beer bottle was a formidable technical challenge. The clever people at Auckland firm Gyro Constructivists first had to design and build a record-cutting lathe, driven by a hard drive recording head. Then they reinvented Edison’s original cylinder player, using modern materials and electronics and built to very fine tolerances. The Edison Bottle made its public debut at SemiPermanent in Auckland in May to a standing ovation from the assembled media and design community.

Beck’s has had a long association with music and art. In fact, at about the same time Heinrich Beck was brewing his first beer in the 1870s, Tom Edison was tinkering away on designs for the first phonograph. Considering how beer has influenced recorded music since then, this physical collaboration was very appropriate and long overdue.

Cuando un guión no funciona, Hollywood recurre a estos profesionales de guardia para afilar diálogos o pulir escenas por un módico precio y sin acreditar.

Pongamos que eres una productora de Hollywood detrás de un buen taquillazo. Echas un vistazo al montón de guiones y tratamientos que han sido seleccionados por tus ayudantes. Hay un par de ellos que no pintan demasiado mal; no son la bomba, pero sí de géneros recurrentes, tienen potencial y puede que con un par de estrellas en el reparto empiecen a generar ruido. Pero tendrás que hablar con los guionistas para limar algunas asperezas, quizás hacer sitio a un nuevo personaje para ese cómico cuya carrera el estudio quiere lanzar… En ese momento, también te acuerdas de aquella tercera parte de una franquicia cuya fecha de rodaje está a punto de llegar y todavía tiene un tercer acto muy atropellado. ¿Qué puedes hacer? Probablemente llamar a un script doctor o consultor de guión.

La figura del script doctor tiene una larga tradición en Hollywood. Son profesionales contratados puntualmente para reescribir o pulir guiones ajenos ya existentes; con distintos grados de implicación, es posible que lleguen a añadir o quitar escenas, modificar estructuras, afilar diálogos o incluso crear nuevos personajes. Eso sí, normalmente sin recibir crédito por ello, lo que puede generar controversias como la producida cuando Ben Affleck y Matt Damon ganaron el Oscar por el guión de El indomable Will Huntingy se reveló que la productora pasó el libreto por las manos del legendario William Goldman. ¿Hasta qué nivel? Difícil de comprobar (aunque él mismo afirma que sólo dio algunos consejos), igual que otros casos, como las aportaciones de Frank Darabont a Salvar al soldado Ryan o M. Night Shyamalan a Inteligencia Artificial.

A continuación repasamos 10 guionistas que han trabajado como script doctors en películas famosas. En algunos casos su aportación fue muy puntual o quedó diluida en posteriores reescrituras, pero en otros, pese al trabajo anónimo, es posible detectar su estilo.
